My Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher, my goals are to get every student excited and motivated to learn the material and to engage them in a discussion of that material that leads to a deeper understanding of both the details and the big picture concepts involved. By really involving them in this discussion, we can foster the critical thinking and problem solving skills they need to succeed not only in the classroom, but in other aspects of life as well.

Basic Bayes App

Prior/posterior example. Corresponds to Mathematical Statistics and Data Analysis section 3.5, example E, by John Rice. Flipping a coin 30 times and observing # of Heads. Likelihood is a binomial. You can alter the Beta prior on Theta = P(Heads).

Journal of Statistics Education (JSE) - Published by the American Statistical Association

  • Published 3 times per year (15-20% acceptance rate).
  • Aimed at all levels and all types of statistics education research (see 1st issue for description of structure and philosophy).
  • Sections for research articles, data sets and stories, research to practice, teaching bits, and interviews with statisticians.
  • For publishing, indicate how your research fits the bigger picture, give an assessment of your curricular innovation, and make sure you do not write at the level of a Ph.D.

Technology Innovations in Statistics Education (TISE) - Published on escholarship.org

  • Published as soon as accepted (8% acceptance rate).
  • Aimed at all levels.
  • Goal is to improve learning of statistics using technology to explain or demonstrate statistical concepts.
  • Research papers report empirical studies or develop theoretical context for teaching with or about technology.
  • Position papers describe a timely issue and propose a solution.
  • Technical Innovations describe new technologies and their design or innovative uses of previous technologies.
  • For publishing, explain why your paper is innovative and give an understanding why technology is helping you to learn more. Give evidence of success in some way and do not forget to check psychology literature.

Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT)

  • The MERLOT Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT) is a peer-reviewed, open-access, online publication that aims to promote scholarship in the use of the Internet and web-based multimedia resources in higher education.

Statistics Education Research Journal (SERJ) - Published by the International Association for Statistical Education(IASE) and the International Statistical Institute (ISI))

  • Published 2 times per year (15-17.5% acceptance rate).
  • Aimed at all levels, in and out of the classroom.
  • Goal is to advance research based knowledge.
  • Describe new research and analyze existing methods.
  • For publishing, show how your idea is new or unique and be sure to gauge reliability (same results when applied to same person) and validity (measures attribute you want it to).
  • Vol 9 No 2 from 2010 gives an overview of publishing qualitative studies.

Teaching Statistics (TJ) - Published by Wiley Online Library

  • Published 3 times per year (33% acceptance rate).
  • Aimed at teachers of 9-19 year olds.
  • Goal is to be a resource for teachers.
  • They want articles that inspire teachers to do new things to engage students.
  • For publishing, shouldn't have too much math and should be easy to bring directly into the classroom.
