Statistics Education Cluster
The Statistics Education cluster consists of department members with interests in teaching and
educational methods. Members strive to increase the quality of teaching in the department and the
teaching effectiveness of academic-bound graduate students. They serve as mentors for those
beginning their teaching careers, supervise teaching TAs, and devote some of their effort to the
scholarship of teaching. University programs such as the
are integral components of this group.s efforts to
promote excellence in teaching. The latter program has been used aggressively to provide teaching
instruction for VIGRE-I Trainees. Trainees and faculty teaching mentors are paired and together
are responsible for teaching one course each of two semesters. During the first semester the
faculty member has primary responsibility for the course; the Trainee is responsible for the
second. Throughout the academic year all participating Trainees attend several workshops
featuring speakers and panels with expertise in various aspects of teaching. Through mentoring or
workshop presentations Trainees gain understanding about syllabus and lecture development,
grading, diversity, and use of technology in the classroom. A doctoral degree program in
statistics education is being explored.
