Statistical Genetics and Bioinformatics Cluster

Statistical Genetics and Bioinformatics build on the department's existing strengths in developing statistical methods for analyzing and interpreting genetic data. Students in bioinformatics focus on the mathematical, statistical, and computational analysis of genomic data. They search for pattern and meaning in the data and develop new statistical methodologies for drawing inferences from the data. Research programs of faculty affiliated with these programs include functional gene mapping, pedigree analysis, quantification of ge-netic diversity and structure in natural and domesticated populations, gene interactions, forensic DNA analysis, pharmacogenetics, evolutionary genomics, molecular evolution, protein se-quence data interpretation, computational methodologies, and microarray data analysis. Faculty and Trainees meet for a coffee hour on a daily basis to discuss the research activities at the Bioinformatics Research Center. Participation in a journal club (PP 610G) is required of all of the students in this program. Vertical integration and mentoring happens naturally in both these activities.
