Consulting Cluster

The department provides statistical consulting services to the university community in a variety of ways. This activity is part of the mission of the department and

The training aspects of the statistical consulting cluster is organized around the statistical consulting practicum that is required of all graduate students. Consulting provides a natural vehicle for mentoring and promoting contact between students and senior scientists. Each semester, the faculty director organizes teams comprising two graduate students (one lead student and one support student) and a faculty member. Teams provide statistical consulting services to university researchers, often including graduate students from other disciplines and their advisors. The lead graduate student plans, schedules, and conducts the consulting sessions, under the oversight of the attending statistics faculty member. The lead is also responsible for post-session follow-up and written progress reports. The support student participates in the sessions contributing questions and ideas. Ideally, each student enrolled in the practicum is a member of at least two teams, once as lead and once providing support.

As a group the student consultants meet weekly in seminar with the faculty director. Each week a team makes a presentation pertaining to the activities of their group. Discussions may focus on the technical aspects of the consultation or the non-technical human aspect. A faculty member with departmental consulting duties usually directs the practicum, but many faculty are involved as team advisors. • Provide advice to researchers on a full range of topics including choice of experiment design, management of data, statistical procedures for analyzing experiments, interpretion of the results, statistical and biomathematical modeling, and statistical computing.
  • Faculty serve as members of graduate committees.
  • Provide the training in statistics and computing necessary to take advantage of these services, and to carry out research and publish the results.
  • Statistics faculty members engage in collaborative research efforts with faculty from other CALS departments.
  • Provide training to Statistics graduate students in statistical practice, through participation in the consulting process.
  • Through its Statistics Computing Support group, assist NC ARS researchers with the management, translation and analysis of data created on different platforms and in different storage formats.
  • Subject to the availability of resources, provide consulting and collaborative services to the entire NCSU research community.
