St 512 TA information

As TA's for ST512 your duties consist of three parts

  1. Presenting the labs
  2. Grading the lab assignments (and keeping records of those grades)
  3. Holding office hours

  1. I have divided our web page http://www.stat.ncsu.edu/people/dickey/st512/ into "labs" (homework topics) each containing several demos and homeworks. I will post which lab and which homework within that lab is due next. You should look over the assigned homework and be sure they know the appropriate SAS code to be able to do it. You can do this by running one of the available demos, just directly talking about the SAS statements that they will need, or otherwise. Reviewing the statistical ideas would also be helpful. It is not my intent with the labs to prepare them for the quizzes. For that, I have posted a rather large collection of old quizzes, many with answers. I am sure they would appreciate it if you could go over some of the old quiz questions with them if time remains in a lab session. I hope they will consider working old quizzes to be an (ungraded) part of each assignment.

  2. You can do the grading in whatever way you like. I have found that assigning 20 points per paper works well, but you can use another scheme if you like. Usually the quizzes they take will spread them out a lot so you do not need to be picky in grading - the main thing is to help them with the concepts and get them used to using software and interpreting output. Please keep track of the grades and if there are more than one of you, be sure to communnicate with each other. Also be sure to check the web page for upcoming homeworks. I do not post answers, but if you have any uncertainty at all about a question, please come to see me. Some points are subtle and it may also be that I can reword something to make it clearer so I appreciate your questions/feedback.

  3. Once your schedule is set, but as early as possible, please inform me of office hours (2 hours per week in the regular semesters) that you can set aside to visit with students in the tutorial room. If you cannot make your hours some week, I can send a message to that effect.
Most importantly, I hope you'll enjoy this task. It is always a great class that draws very nice and interested people. You are an important part of what we do and have an impact on how the students perceive the course. Thanks for your help.
